Abstract
A 5-day contemporary science and engineering education program for 8th and 9th grade students, held at Penn State Altoona in August 1997 is described. This program known as Regional Summer School of Excellence (RSSE) was funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. A total of 48 students representing 17 school districts participated in the program. The objectives of this program were: to create a vision of science and engineering that is process-oriented, motivational, exploratory, and encourages problem solving and to impart students tool which would be helpful to them in learning more advanced scientific concepts.
