N2 - A continuum field theory of crack propagation is presented. The model is the wave equations for the elastic deformations combined with the equation for the order parameter. In general, the model captures all important phenomenology, including crack initiation by small perturbation, quasistationary propagation, instability of fast cracks, sound emission, branching, and fragmentation.
