Abstract
Controlled microwave heating and melting of silica, alumina, and aluminosilicate gels were achieved in a 600‐W domestic‐type oven. The microwave absorption mechanism of these gels is not yet clear. However, parameters were defined whereby rapid heating (including melting) is achieved for these gels. Empirical results indicate that the heating behavior is dependent on the chemistry, structure, and mass of the gel.
