note = "Funding Information: During my stay in industry I was engaged in the development of carbon brushes, carbon fibre-reinforced carbon and silicon-infiltrated graphite (pressure infiltration). After I left the company, there was nearly no electrical motor that did not use our brushes. The development of carbon-fibre reinforced carbon and silicon-infiltrated graphite led to carbon endoprotheses for the hip joint with unique sliding properties. This much-noticed project was sponsored by the German Ministry of Research and Development. After returning to the Institute, I managed this project for another 5 years. Funding Information: These studies led to the formation of a so-called Cooperative Research Center at our university including three faculties (chemistry, physics, materials sciences). Its general theme was “Carbon from the gas phase: elementary reactions, structures, materials” and it was financed by the German Research Foundation. I was acting as a head of the Center up to my retirement in 2003. ",
