Abstract

The recent implementation of 12. 47 kv distribution systems in some underground coal mines has not resulted in the increased system integrity which was anticipated. This is primarily due to the destruction of cables, couplers, and stress cones by corona discharge. This paper reviews the nature of corona, its effect on dielectric materials, and steps which can be taken to minimize corona discharges.
