Abstract
The authors regret that the text above Eq. 5 in ref. 1, “As in most books on thermodynamics, the work due to the hydrostatic pressure, −PdV” is not correct. Under the hydrostatic pressure, the work should be written as follows 2(1)dW=−P(dV−∑VidNi)where P is pressure, dV the volume change of the system, Vi the partial molar volume of component i, and dNi the change of moles of component i. The summation is added because the change of each component results in the change of the volume of the system. Consequently, Eq. 5 in ref. 1 should be written as follows under the condition of hydrostatic pressure(2)μi=Ui−TSi+PVi References1.Liu, Z. K. Computational thermodynamics and its applications.
