    Abstract

This paper introduces a simple design approach for falling-film absorbers. Based on a one-dimensional analysis of the absorber treated as a counterflow heat exchanger, a generic expression was derived that links the number of transfer units to the effectiveness for heat and mass transfer, defined in the text. This expression thus incorporates the effects of mass transfer on performance in terms of conventional dimensionless parameters. The objective of the analysis is to conveniently condense design information typically required for constant-pressure absorbers, without losing generality pertaining to absorber configuration and working fluids.
