Abstract

Proper alignments of runway rails of factory cranes are crucial for safe and reliable operation. A method is presented to estimate rail locations: head and web of rail. A standard rail template is compared to a slice of a rail point cloud at regular interval. Two-step matching is performed. The first step is to create a shortlist of candidate locations and the second step is a dense match between the template and the rail points. Root mean square error (RMSE) at each rail point is computed by comparing the nearest rail points and inflection points from the template. Lowest RMSE location is selected as the correct match.
