Abstract
Cross sections for collisions of high energy hadrons with nuclei are distributed with a rather large dispersion around the mean cross section. Cross section fluctuations account for diffractive dissociation processes in inelastic high energy collisions and can be determined from inelastic shadowing contributions to total cross sections. These effects lead to an enhancement of fluctuations, increasing with beam energy, in transverse energy and multiplicity.
