Abstract

Membrane plasmapheresis with on-line cold filtration of plasma (cryopheresis) has been proposed as a safer, more efficient, and more cost-effective alternative to plasma exchange. Trapping of circulating immune complexes (ICs) and other immunoglobulin molecules is enhanced by cryoprecipitation or cryogelation while the expense and potential dangers of plasma exchange are avoided. Clinical trials with cryopheresis have been performed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This paper reports on the use of cryopheresis in the treatment of 5 patients with serologically and clinically active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
