Abstract

Culture and the arts have often been left out of the development equation. Efforts for development at the local and regional levels tend to focus on other aspects - predominately economic in nature. At the same time, culture has played an important, if often unrecognized, role in local community development. This chapter introduces concepts and contexts of culture and the arts, through a community development lens. Varying aspects of culture are explored, concluding with a consideration of the future of culture in development.
