Abstract
There has long been considerable controversy regarding the role of coke reactivity during iron melting in a cupola. In 1982, the Cupola Fuels Committee of the American Foundrymen's Society sponsored a research project to determine quantitatively the effect of coke reactivity on cupola performance. Subsequently eight cupola heats were conducted in the foundry laboratory at Pennsylvania State University to examine the effects of coke reactivity on cupola performance. The operating conditions were kept constant for all the heats except for the coke reactivity. Data were obtained for the composition and temperature of the effluent gases below the charge door, wall temperature distribution in the well, combustion, melting and the preheating zones, temperature of the metal at the spout, average size in the drop coke and melting rates.
