Decomposition of structural and hydrodynamic contributions for unsteady rotor thrust

    Abstract

    A method is described for separating hydrodynamic excitation from structural responses for unsteady thrust measurements on a rotor driven by a dynamometer. The method exploits the hydrodynamic similitude by operating the rotor at a constant advance ratio for a range of RPM conditions. The normalization and decomposition of the frequency component of the unsteady thrust spectrum allows for the separation of hydrodynamic and structural components. The technique is structured such that the calibration of the dynamometer is performed without the rotor installed. Results are shown for the rotor operating in a turbulent flow.
