Abstract

High temperature imide based composites offer significant weight savings over steel and titanium in applications in the 149°C (300°F) to 288°C (550°F) region. A recent laboratory test program showed that when graphite bismaleimide composites are immersed in salt water while in contact with a metal the resin is removed from the fibers and the composite delaminates. Because of the corrosive operating environment and the importance of imide based composites to the Navy, a program to examine this degradation was initiated at NADC. This paper describes the experiments performed and the results of this initial study.
