abstract = "Demonstrating autonomous construction capability is critical for enabling a long-term sustainable human presence on the Moon and Mars. This paper seeks to demonstrate an automated system for detecting construction progress and assembling a structure on Mars. We evaluate the system{\textquoteright}s success in various Martian lighting conditions in simulation. A Mars demonstration mission to construct a sub-scale landing pad and blast wall is proposed as the context for the experiments, based on current in-situ construction missions planned for the moon. The contributed system and simulation environment may serve as a foundation for more advanced automated construction techniques to build upon and evaluate performance on Mars.",
