Abstract
Dental cements are chemically bonded ceramics which are bonded by chemical reactions without the use of thermally activated solid state diffusion. This paper deals with the nature of the chemical bonding reactions in dental cements. Several dental cements such as Zn phosphate, Zn-eugenol, polycarboxylate and glass ionomer-types were characterized before reaction, after reaction and after heating to 500°C for their phase composition by powder x-ray diffraction. Chemical bonding resulted in all cases via non-crystalline phase formation. Microstructural development after reaction of these dental cements is also presented.
