Abstract

A mean field theory for the depinning transition in a driven layered charge density wave (CDW) taken as a prototype for a driven periodic structure is derived. The dynamics of the dislocations appearing in a 2D flowing system is investigated. This indicates that the disorder induces a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang nonlinearity which gives rise to a nontrivial screening of interactions between dislocations resulting in the proliferation of free dislocations, and therefore, in an instability of the 2D driven lattices.
