Abstract

A design approach for seisrnic upgrading of existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings is developed. The basic objective of the procedure is to modify the response shape of the structure so as to achieve a near uniform distribution of interstorey drift along the building beight, thereby eliminating damage localization. Demand is established by use of yield point spectra whereas dimensioning and detailing is based on a displacement-based approach. The fundamental steps of the method are described in detail, including a systematic evaluation of employed assumptions and lirnitations.
