Abstract

This paper presents the design of a high-speed permanent magnet machine for flywheel energy storage applications. The design is an open-core rotator type, where the rotor of the ma- chine surrounds the stator. Design specifications are the ability to generate a mechanical power of 100W over a speed range of 150-300krpm. Results of design analysis using continuum so- lutions and finite element analysis are presented. Rotor losses and stresses are shown to be manageable through careful de- sign which consists of segmenting the magnet poles. Materials selection for the flywheel motor/generator and inertial rim will be discussed. Assembly techniques for the stator and rotor are presented. The machine design is currently under construction.
