Abstract

This paper presents a general introduction to a sequence of papers, on the development of on-line/hybrid, general-education, natural sciences courses, in The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University. The paper focuses on the philosophy that drives our instructional design, and emphasizes our collective mission: to promote scientific literacy in the college-educated citizen. The paper also discusses the collaborative nature of the design process, and could serve as a model for faculty who are thinking of migrating a conventional science-based course to web-delivery.
