Abstract

Teacher educators seek approaches to design teacher learning environments that empower teachers to address situated problems of teaching by shaping their own learning. This symposium provides a learning sciences perspective on these efforts, sharing insights from six studies for designing and examining participatory teacher learning environments (PTLEs). The lessons derived provide an initial framework for designing PTLEs, highlighting three shared features: creating alternative forms of relationality, drawing on histories for transformation, and engaging in collective future-making for agentic teacher learning.
