Designing ThinkerSpaces: Research–Practice Partnerships for GenAI-Supported Collaborative Knowledge Building in STEM

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

As STEM challenges grow more complex—interwoven with climate change, public health, infrastructure crises, and rapid technological shifts—educational systems face a growing mismatch between what learners are asked to solve and how they are prepared to solve it. While generative AI (GenAI) offers new possibilities, it also introduces tensions that may reinforce outdated paradigms and deepen existing inequities. In this paper, we propose a design framework for ThinkerSpaces: community-connected, technology-rich learning environments built through research–practice partnerships (RPPs). Grounded in human-centered design and collaborative regulation theory, ThinkerSpaces position GenAI not as an answer machine, but as a tool for learners to use to enhance their thinking processes, the role of which must be strategically negotiated. We argue that educational transformation requires environments where learners collaboratively build knowledge, negotiate the ethical use of technology, and strengthen their collective intelligence.
