Abstract
This article presents the theoretical basis from which a sampling interval may be meaningfully determined in the surface roughness measurements for engineering tribology applications. Equations are derived that relate the measurement sampling interval to the material properties of the part and the RMS roughness of the surface. The feasibility of the roughness measurements is discussed. The study also reveals some insights into the surface characterization parameters and the quality of surface run-in processes.
