Developing Ethical and Professional Skills

The applications of behavioral science are many. The use of applied behavior analysis in delivering clinical services to a wide range of individuals (both neurotypical and atypical) has been shown to produce significant clinical outcomes, improving the quality of life for those individuals fortunate enough to receive behavior analytic services. Adhering to evidence-based practices is a key factor in the success of our field. One can also argue that adhering to our strong ethical code also contributes to the success of behavioral interventions. Behaving ethically as a behavior analyst is a serious obligation. The professional development of behavior analysts providing clinical services encompasses both acquiring professional and ethical skills. Behavioral organizations are responsible for hiring and training their behavioral employees in ethical and professional skills. There are a number of evidence-based strategies for promoting the acquisition of clinical skills that trainers and administrators can use to develop a competent and ethical workforce. Instruction must also be given to train behavior analysts how to deal with unethical behavior in the workplace and how to set up their individual and collective environment to increase the chances of ethical behavior as well as optimal professional skills.
