Development of a collaborative problem solving instructional model and its implementation in engineering technology classes

Abstract

Engineers who work in high-performance work environments must be able to communicate effectively with each other and work in teams. They must also be empowered with higher skills, greater flexibility, and risk-taking abilities to actually stop a production line, solve problems, and make decisions. The development and implementation of a team-based nontraditional innovative teaching approach to develop the above mentioned critical skills in the two-year engineering technology students of Pennsylvania State University are described. The conceptual model for the teaching approach is first presented, then the process of implementing the collaborative learning based approach is described.
