Abstract
The factors affecting cold heading process are discussed and a ductile fracture criteria applicable to the process is defined. The material parameters affecting cold heading include surface quality, cleanliness, chemical composition, microstructure and absence of surface carburization. The process parameters having an influence on the cold heading process include the strain rate and temperature during deformation; amount of pre-draw prior to cold heading; and lubrication between die and workpiece. The drop weight compression test (DWCT) is discussed that can be used to determine stress strain behavior and a fracture criterion.
