Development of a fracture criterion for cold heading

Abstract

In order to have accurately numerical simulations of the cold heading process, it is imperative to define a fracture criterion that is appropriate for the conditions actually encountered during cold heading. The Dynamic Drop Weight Test (DDWT) machine uses a falling weight to apply a compressive load to a workpiece. It is capable of generating strain rates comparable to those of cold heading, which cannot be attained by servo-hydraulic machines. The DDWT may be used to determine the compressive stress-strain behavior and fracture strength. In addition, the test can be used in the development of a fracture criterion for input into finite element models of cold heading operations.
