Abstract

In this paper, efforts to develop a hybrid rocket simulation testbed at Penn State Harrisburg will be presented. The paper will focus on using CFD to evaluate the performance of hybrid rocket motors, starting with cold flow simulations and working toward full combustion simulation. Several key hybrid configurations will be discussed including standard center-bore axial-injection and center-bore swirl-injection configurations. Initial cold-flow results will be benchmarked against existing analytical models while reacting models will be compared to existing experimental and simulation studies. This project is the start of a larger effort to increase undergraduate student participation in aerospace research at Penn State Harrisburg.
