Development of a simplified design criterion for walking vibrations

Abstract

This paper presents the development of a simplified equation for floor vibration assessment of steel office floors for walking excitations. Using a database of over 2000 floor system evaluations, multivariate statistical methods were employed in the formulation. The research was undertaken to provide building design professionals with an "easier" means of checking floor system properties early in the design process, hopefully resulting in the most economical system, while maintaining serviceability. Presently, the simplified equation is limited to non-composite, grade 50 steel beams and girders selected using the LRFD method.
