title = "Deviance, Resistance, and A Study in the Communicative Organization of Trouble in Class",
abstract = "This article provides a brief examination of contemporary sociological conceptions of “deviance” and “resistance” in the study of youth culture, and an exploration of the applicability of a notion of “play” or “playfulness” to the understanding of disruptive behavior in a classroom setting. Following the work of James Heap, we examine a transcription of a particular lesson sequence, paying special attention-to what we term the “asides” developed by certain class members. We contend that these asides remain linked to the Elicitation-Response- Feedback structure of the official lesson, and that they bear a provocative descriptive affinity to some of the structural characteristics of “play.” We use this descriptive affinity to raise the question of the significance of interpreting these behaviors as “playful” rather than “deviant.”.",

note = "Funding Information: by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada postdoctoral fellowship. Data collection involved the tape recording of lesson sequences for subsequent analysis according to the methods and maxims of conversational analysis and related sociolinguistic research. The approach used may be characterized as {"}applied conversational analysis,{"} inasmuch as it relies on existing developments in the field, rather than undertaking the further development of the field's foundations. Another example of the applied approach is to be found in West & Zimmerman (1977). During a field visit in the first part of May, 1984, two lesson sequences (units of classroom lessons continuing over the course of several consecutive days) in classes on {"}Skills for Everyday Living{"} were audiotaped, a grade 11-12 mixed gender class on nutrition, and a grade 9, all male class on textiles. For this paper, audiotaped material from the grade 9 class was transcribed by Grahame and revised with helpful suggestions from David Jardine and Kamini Maraj Grahame.",
