Abstract
School-based diabetes care for children with diabetes mellitus (DM) can be challenging and overwhelming. Successful outcomes for these children require close coordination of care between the diabetes health care professionals and the school personnel. Management of type 1 diabetes (T1D) is more challenging than treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the school setting, as children with T1D are insulin-dependent. The ultimate treatment goals are the achievement of adequate glucose control, avoidance of DM-related complications, and good quality of life. Successful coordination of care at the school setting is crucial for optimal clinical outcomes and adequate cognitive and emotional development.
