Abstract
Dieting typically refers to individuals' short-term attempts to lose weight by restricting the amount or types of foods that are consumed. The majority of women and a growing portion of men engage in dieting behaviors, typically pursuing different dieting strategies across multiple attempts at weight loss. The weight loss industry is a multibillion dollar industry, yet most programs, plans, pills, and prescriptions do not actually result in weight loss. Psychologists and other medical professionals who understand dieting recommend other approaches to weight loss, primarily long-term lifestyle changes, if weight loss is desired or required due to ill health.
