Abstract
Two methods for design sensitivity analysis have been used in the literature. One is the 'adjoint' method which has its origin in optimal control theory, and the other is the so-called 'direct' method. These two approaches to design sensitivity analysis are reviewed. Optimal design problems in structural, mechanical dynamics and distributed-parameter systems are considered. Second-order design sensitivity analysis is also discussed.
