Abstract
The present study is an attempt to provide precise information at the microvascular level in terms of structural makeup, segmental (or regional) pressures and pressure differentials in relation to microvascular flow. In general, two approaches to the functional behavior of microvascular networks can be made: The distribution of such parameters as pressure and volumetric flow rate can be examined as a function of the location in the geometric hierarchy from artery-to-capillary-to vein, and to examine the ″perfusion mechanics″ in single vessels and at various branching configurations. The term ″perfusion mechanics″ is used here to emphasize the many facteted problems in fluid mechanics which are encountered in dealing with a particular suspension such as blood, as well as the stochastic nature of microcirculatory blood flow and inequalities in vessel hematocrit.
