The decade of the 1980s began in quite a pessimistic way for health communication scholars who seriously questioned their legitimacy. In the much respected Health Communication Overview section of Communication Yearbook 4, Donald Cassata (1980) wrote that “the role of the Communication scholar in the health field has not yet been legitimized, primarily because health communication has not been recognized as a legitimate field of study” (p. 584). With the publication of this initial issue of the scholarly journal Health Communication, the decade of the 1980s is concluding with a strong piece of evidence that indicates that health communication as a legitimate field of inquiry has finally arrived. The purpose of this brief article is to give, in some small way, direction to researchers who wish to investigate the communication process within the health setting.
