Abstract
The EPA has identified four disinfection byproducts — TTHMs, haloacetic acids, bromate, and chlorite — that must be limited to specific levels. Most of the information required to comply with EPA standards is scattered throughout many diverse sources. Disinfection Byproducts in Drinking Water: Formation, Analysis, and Control pulls all the information together to provide the needed organized presentation of disinfection byproduct analysis, formation, and control. This practical guide introduces all disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and provides nomenclature, molecular structures, and formation. It discusses the effects of water quality parameters on the formation and stability of DBPs in drinking water, and examines DBP degradation reactions, technologies for DBP removal and control, and the formation and control of inorganic DBPs. The text also reviews regulations, current analytical methods, and data evaluation for DBP monitoring. Bringing together the findings of many notable researchers in the field, this book serves as a key resource for understanding the formation of disinfection byproducts and how they are analyzed and controlled. Chemists will salute the analytical techniques offered in the book, and plant engineers will greatly benefit from the formation and control information.
