Abstract

The hellbender is generally declining throughout its range and is endangered in Maryland. If reintroductions of small numbers of individuals (= or <30) are made, translocated individuals from the same drainage should be released during months with low stream discharge rates and before the mating season. Early spring release would minimise disperal, maximise chances for intersexual contact, and provide time for females to secure suitable nesting sites. -P.J.Jarvis
