Abstract
San Diego has been researching membrane bioreactor (MBR) under a grant from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and as part of a project to evaluate MBRs' ability to treat advanced primary system effluent containing polymer and coagulant residual. The project team has also tested the effectiveness of NF and RO membranes to treat MBR effluent. The team intended to demonstrate that various desalting membranes (NF/RO) can be used to treat MBR effluent to produce purified water for reuse. The pilot test were conducted at the 908,400-m 3/d Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant. Phase 1 results show that all four desalting membranes treated MBR effluent with minimal fouling, while operating at 10 gfd.
