Abstract

The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, as a model organism has provided important insights into the genetic basis of complex behaviors. Here we review the basics of Drosophila behavioral genetics by focusing on a set of classic examples including circadian rhythm, courtship, and olfactory learning and memory. We then review more recent findings on the role of natural variation in behavior and discuss its ecological and evolutionary implications. Last, we explore the role of extra genomes, that is, bacterial symbioses, in determining Drosophila behavior.
