    Abstract

Dual-polarization radar measurements from a hailstorm in central Oklahoma are presented. These are the first 11 cm wavelength measurements of ZDR together with KDP along the entire radar range, supported by in situ aircraft and ground based observations. Two hail signals, HDR and HKDP are demonstrated and confirmed by aircraft and ground based observations. HDR and HKDP are based on differential reflectivity (ZDR) and specific differential phase (KDP) measurements, respectively. It is observed that HKDP is more conservative and less sensitive to small hail, leading to the hypothesis that HKDP will indicate hailstones when their diameters exceed 7 mm.
