Abstract

A dual-stack piezoelectric device exhibiting bidirectional actuation was discussed. The stack element were electrically operated out of phase and were integrated in a mechanically opposing configuration. It was shown that compared to two parallel single stack actuator, the dual-stack actuator produces greater free stroke, output energy, and energy efficiency. It was observed that the dual stack actuator with reduced size will be 62% volume and weight of a single stack actuator that produced the same amount of blocked force and free strain.
