Abstract

Helicoidal bianisotropic media (HBM) are general classes of bianisotropic media characterized by rotational inhomogeneity. The inhomogeneous nature is based on a periodicity of the constitutive parameters in one spatial dimension as defined by the helicoidal axis of the system. The infinite-medium frequency-dependent dyadic Green function formalism is developed for the restricted case of field dependence on one spatial coordinate only, this being the coordinate in direction of the helicoidal axis of the HBM. The dyadic problem for the (inhomogeneous) HBM is transformed into one for equivalent homogeneous bianisotropic media. A closed-form solution for the dyadic Green functions pertaining to axially varying fields is given and particular emphasis is placed on the arising expressions for special cases of HBM, the cholesteric liquid crystals.
