Abstract
Eating disorders are increasingly common among adolescents in our society. They occur in up to 5% of young people today. They have a multifactorial etiology including biological, psychological, and social factors. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are eating disorders that can have serious and sometimes permanent medical consequences. It is very important for the physician to diagnose these conditions and initiate treatment. Proper therapy is usually multidisciplinary, involving medical, psychological and nutritional follow-up. With appropriate treatment and a sympathetic approach that counteracts our culture's link between thinness and physical attractiveness, the prognosis for adolescents with eating disorders is very favorable.
