Abstract
The management of eclampsia presents many challenges for which neurologists may have an important contribution. Indeed, although they are infrequently consulted, neurologists may be most helpful in the management of seizures and intracerebral vascular events that occur in eclampsia. Although much remains to be done in understanding the pathophysiology of preeclampsia and eclampsia, newer drugs with effects on the cerebrovascular circulation (e.g., nimodipine) and on seizures may find a role in preventing neurologic compromise. More basic and clinical research from both obstetric and neurologic perspectives are required for optimal management of patients with eclampsia.
