Abstract

Ecological and environmental science/studies, ecological literacy, environmental education, sustainability studies, education for the commons - these contemporary iterations of older efforts that include nature studies, outdoor education, and conservation education - have revealed what had formerly been concealed: connections or relationships. Having recognized a connection between car driving and cultural annihilation within the underdeveloped world, the systems thinker might construct new ways of thinking about cars, communities, and cultures. The co-optation - given the worldwide dominance of economics - of natural systems into economic systems extends this globalism. Real Teihardianism - the evolutionary convergence of all minds into a singular and global consciousness - is technological and socioeconomic development taken to its fullest conclusion. The eco-discourse creates a stage for human action that is simultaneously hubris ridden in its global and globalizing aspirations and dehumanizing as human beings lose the evolutionary race to their technologies.
