N1 - Funding Information:
The historical ban on spending federal Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) dollars to study gun violence, also known as the Dickey Amendment, has severely limited scientific advancements in our understanding of gun violence and its consequences. In 2019, closing a 20-year gap, federal lawmakers allocated $25 million in support of gun violence research to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health. The funding will also supplement the Department of Justice’s work, which continued during the DHHS-backed gun violence research hiatus. These efforts augment funding from private foundations like Arnold Ventures (which funds the National Collaborative on Gun Violence Research managed by The RAND Corporation) and The Joyce Foundation (which supports the National Gun Violence Research Center housed at the Police Executive Research Forum).

N2 - The Journal of Primary Prevention is dedicating this special issue to the topic of gun violence and the detrimental effects it has on communities. The papers represent original research articles providing scientific evidence on the unintended consequences of gun violence and exposure to such violence in neighborhoods and communities. These papers also take seriously the role of theory in our understanding of gun violence. Funding for gun violence research is experiencing a resurgence, and these papers substantively contribute to that narrative.
