Abstract
Several experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of age of exposure and dietary acidification and alkalinization on broiler pulmonary hypertension syndrome (BPHS) induced by hypobaric hypoxia. There was no difference in mortality when birds exposed to hypobaric hypoxia beginning on the day of hatch were compared with birds exposed to hypobaric hypoxia beginning at 10 days of age. Ascites mortality was dramatically reduced in birds removed from hypobaric hypoxia at 10 days of age. Mortality due to BPHS significantly decreased in birds fed an alkalinized ration and increased, although not significantly, in birds fed an acidified ration. The mechanism of action and practical application of these dietary manipulations requires further study.
