Abstract
Smectites of varying crystal chemistry (montmorillonite, nontronite, saponite, and hectorite) were pillared with alumina and were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and water sorption and BET nitrogen surface area measurements. Variations in the shape of isotherms of these smectites indicated that the distribution of pillars in the interlayers which controls the pore size, and the degree of affinity of ore surface to water molecules are different in each class of smectites due to the difference in their crystal chemistry. -from Authors
