Abstract

Core drillings from lignite deposits in Panola County, Texas, were tested in pilot-scale combustion tests to determine the combustion characteristics of this lignite, including its fouling potential, fly ash collectability, and sulfur capture. Limestone injection tests were also conducted to evaluate the amount of additional alkali needed to meet New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for sulfur emissions for existing boilers. In addition, high stoichiometric ratio limestone injection tests were conducted to determine if 70% sulfur removal could be achieved by limestone injection for this low sulfur coal. A preliminary economic evaluation is included to compare this method of sulfur removal with wet scrubbing.
