Abstract
Experimental results show that workpiece displacement is a significant source of geometric error for workpieces restrained by small area contact. In addition, the results show that displacement is affected significantly by locator and clamp layout and locator contact region geometry. This paper describes the test facility and experimentation used to derive these results. It provides experimental data which illustrate the magnitude of workpiece displacement during clamping and machining. It presents a technique for predicting orientation errors caused by workpiece displacement. Results from this model are compared to experimental data.
